Joel and Marissa have been on a horror flick viewing spree. The more gore the better. She and Joel like to rewind the "best" parts and talk about it. After (e.g. "How about when that guy got sliced up like lunch meat by that barbed wire?? That was so cool.) Marissa in particular has a spine of steel. Usually I find something else to do while they watch these movies, but last night I joined them for "When a Stranger Calls"--a remake of my fav scary movie. There is not so much gore as psychological suspense as the babysitter figures out that the killer is in the house. Even Joel started whimpering. Marissa, however, was gravely disappointed because she didn't get to witness the actual kills. Also, b/c the victims were strangled, there wasn't even a drop of blood! Marissa's favorite movies of late are the "Final Destination" series where the victims are prey to freakish accidents as part of Death's design as opposed to a psychotic serial killer. And she is such a sweet, nurturing girl who watches over babies for a living. Halloween is coming up. We'll have to work in a haunted house/cave for her at the Natural Bridge.
